Burlington, Iowa is a town in Des Moines County, Iowa, United States. The population was 25,663 in the 2010 census, a decline from 26,839 in the 2000 census. Burlington is the center of a micropolitan area including West Burlington and Middletown, Iowa. Burlington is the home of Snake Alley, once labelled the crookedest alley in the world.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.0 square miles (28.4 km2), all of it land.

Burlington is located about 100 miles (160 km) south of Iowa’s capital city, Des Moines, on the Mississippi River.

Burlington has the world’s steepest and shortest street, Snake Alley. It is a fiveblocklong brickpaved street with a 25% grade.

History of Burlington (Iowa)

Burlington, Iowa is a city located in Des Moines County, Iowa. It is the county seat of Des Moines County and is also the center of the Burlington, IAIL Micropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 25,663. Burlington is the home of Snake Alley, the crookedest alley in the world.

The first EuropeanAmerican settlers came to the area now called Burlington in 1833. They named the town after Burlington, Vermont. The first permanent residential settlers arrived in 1834. James Edwards built the first frame house, and the first sawmill and gristmill were soon operating. The town was platted in 1837.

In 1838, Burlington was designated the second territorial capital of Wisconsin Territory. The Territorial Legislature met in Burlington until 1841, when it moved to Belmont, Wisconsin.

When the Wisconsin Territory was created in 1836, the territorial legislature convened in Burlington.

The city was incorporated on January 16, 1849, and grew rapidly after the arrival of the railroad in 1856. By 1859, Burlington had a population of over 4,000.

In 1863, the city was the site of the Battle of Honey Springs, the largest engagement of the American Civil War west of the Mississippi River.

On January 10, 1866, Burlington was struck by a tornado that killed 8 people and injured 58. The earthquake caused extensive damage to downtown Burlington and was followed by a fire that destroyed much of the city.

In 1867, the Northwestern Railway Company extended its line from Galena, Illinois to Burlington.
