History of Brookfield
Brookfield was first settled in 1834 by Luke Kelly and his family. The Kellys were Irish immigrants who had first settled in New York City before moving to Wisconsin. They built a log cabin near the presentday intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and Capitol Drive. Other settlers soon followed, attracted by the cheap land and good hunting.
The first real community in Brookfield developed around a sawmill built by Benjamin F. Goss in 1837. The mill provided employment for many of the early settlers and helped to fuel the growth of the community. By 1850, Brookfield had grown to include a blacksmith, a tavern, and a few small stores.
In 1892, the Milwaukee, Lake Shore & Western Railway built a line through Brookfield, making it possible for residents to travel to Milwaukee and other cities for work. The village was incorporated in 1893.
Brookfield continued to grow in the early 20th century, thanks in part to the development of the electric streetcar line which ran from Milwaukee to Waukesha. This made it possible for people to live in Brookfield and work in Milwaukee. The population of the village grew from 1,000 in 1900 to 4,000 in 1940.
In the postWorld War II years, Brookfield experienced a boom as families moved to the suburbs in search of larger homes and better schools. The population of the village grew to nearly 20,000 by 1970.
Today, Brookfield is a thriving community with a population of more than 37,000. The city has its own school district, library, and parks system. Brookfield is also home to several corporate headquarters, including Wisconsin Energy Corporation, Fiserv, and Generac.
