History of Bronx

TheCity of Bronx is the northernmost of the five boroughs of New York City. It is geographically the largest borough and is adjacent to the borough of Manhattan to its south and west, the borough of Queens to its east, and Westchester County to its north. Since 1914, the borough has had the same boundaries as Bronx County, the thirdmost densely populated county in the United States.

The Bronx has a land area of 42 square miles (109 km2) and a population of 1,471,160 in 2019. Of the five boroughs, it has the fourthlargestarea and the fourthhighest population. It is the only borough predominantly on the U.S. mainland.

The borough’s name originated with Swedishborn Jonas Bronck, who established the first settlement in the area as part of the New Netherland colony in 1639. The Bronx is referred to with the definite article as “The Bronx”, both legally and colloquially.

The region now known as the Bronx was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. In the 1600s, the Dutch established the first European settlements in the area, which was part of their colony of New Netherland. The Bronx was ceded to England in 1664.

Under British rule, the area became the southernmost part of the province of New York. When the area was split off to form the separate colony of Connecticut in 1683, the northern part of the Bronx became part of the new colony. In 1776, the Bronx joined the other 12 colonies in rebellious war against the British Crown.

After the war ended in 1783, the Bronx was organized as a county within the State of New York. The Bronx initially consisted of the towns of Westchester and Yonkers, as well as the Village of Morrisania.

In 1846, the Village of Kingsbridge was established in what is now the Bronx River section of the borough. In 1855, the Village ofFordham was incorporated into the Bronx.

The towns of Westchester, Yonkers, and Morrisania were annexed by the City of New York in 1874, becoming the presentday Bronx neighborhoods of Westchester Square, Yonkers, and Morrisania, respectively.

The modern borough was created in 1898 when the City of New York consolidated the area into the current administrative unit. When the Bronx was annexed to New York City in 1898, the eastern portion of the Bronx was combined with Westchester County, while the western portion was annexed to New York City as part of the borough of Manhattan.

The Bronx is the third most populous borough in New York City, after Brooklyn and Queens. As of the 2010 census, the borough had a population of 1,385,108, an increase of 8.3% from the 2000 census. Its high population density of 34,650 people per square mile (13,380/km2) makes it the most densely populated borough in New York City. This density is higher than that of Manhattan, which is the next most populous borough in the city and is about 27% more densely populated than the Bronx.

The Bronx is served by a diverse set of transportation systems. Air travel is served by two airports located within its borders: LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport. The Bronx is also connected to Manhattan and the rest of New York City by a large network of bridges and tunnels.

The Bronx has a long and rich history. It was once the site of the Siwanoy Indian tribe, one of the earliest identifiable groups in the area. The Bronx is also home to the Bronx Zoo, one of the largest zoos in the world; the New York Botanical Garden, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the United States; and the Pelham Bay Park, the largest park in New York City.
