Brockton is a historic city in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. It is the seat of Plymouth County and one of the backer cities of the Plymouth Colony. Brockton is 35 miles (56 km) south of Boston and also 15 miles (24 km) north of Plymouth, the colonial capital of Plymouth Colony. Brockton lies within the metropolitan area as that of Boston, which is the south of the city and has a population of 4,873,019 people, making it the 21st most populous metropolis in the United States. Brockton is named after the first Pilgrim settlers who brought cattle over from England to the Plymouth Colony in 1623 and sold them to the Native Americans.
The city has numerous historical sites, such as the BenjaminECTon Museum, the oldest museum in the city which was built in 1884; the Brockton Fire Tower, which is the tallest building in the city and was used as a watchtower to spot fires; the Brockton Fair, which is the oldest and largest fair in the city and takes place annually; and the Plymouth Plantation, which is a living history museum that showcases the daily life of the Pilgrims.

History of Brockton
Brockton is a city in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States; the population was 95,314 in 2019. Brockton, along with Plymouth, are the county seats of Plymouth County. Brockton is the seventhlargest city in Massachusetts and is one of the gateway cities to the South Shore. According to the 2010 census, Brockton has a total area of 21.6 square miles (56 km2), of which 20.7 square miles (53 km2) is land and 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2) (4.19%) is water. Brockton is about 25 miles (40 km) south of Boston, and 30 miles (48 km) northeast of Providence, Rhode Island.
The first recorded mention of the area now known as Brockton was in the Booke of the Fourth parte of the generall historie of the Turkes written by Nicolas Machiavelli and published in 1584. This book describes the early battles between the Turks and the Christians in Europe. In the section on the war with the French, he writes about the “valiant” captain Robert, who fought the French at the siege of Vienna in 1529. This “valiant” captain Robert was almost certainly Captain Robert Gorges, the son of Sir Ferdinando Gorges, one of the original investors in the Plymouth Company. Machiavelli goes on to say that this same Captain Robert Gorges later settled in “a certaine place in New England, which he calledBroccston”, which can only be a reference to Brockton, Massachusetts.
In 1623, the Plymouth Colony was founded by a group of English Puritans who came to the New World in search of religious freedom. Brockton was not part of the original colony, but it was later established as a plantation by one of the colony’s leaders, William Brewster. Brockton became a town in 1821 and a city in 1881.
Throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Brockton was a major manufacturing center, producing shoes, cigars, and other products. The city was also known for its notorious gangsters, such as Al Capone, who operated out of Brockton during Prohibition.
During the second half of the twentieth century, Brockton underwent a transformation as manufacturing jobs dwindled and the population shifted from a predominately white, bluecollar workforce to a more diverse, largely black and Hispanic population. Today, Brockton is a vibrant, multicultural city with a thriving economy and a rich history.
