History of Branford

Branford is a town in New Haven County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 28,026 at the 2010 census. Branford is located on Long Island Sound, and includes Stony Creek, Branford Center, and North Branford.

European settlement in the area began with Dutch homesteads in the 1630s. The town is named after Edward Brandywine, an early settler.

In 1644, the town was incorporated under the name “Brandon”, after the River Brandon in England. In 1729, the town was renamed “Branford” after the same river in England.

Branford played an active role in the American Revolution, with several residents serving as soldiers and officers in the Continental Army. The town is also home to the only surviving house from the 1778 Battle of Stony Point, which was fought during the Revolutionary War.

During the 19th century, Branford grew rapidly as an industrial and manufacturing center. The town’s industries included brass mills, clothing factories, and shipbuilding. The Branford Lock and Hardware Company was one of the largest businesses in the town, and employed hundreds of workers.

The Branford Electric Railway and Light Company operated a trolley system in Branford from 1886 to 1931. The trolley system was replaced by buses in 1932.

Branford was also home to the Shore Line Trolley Museum from 1949 to 2019. The museum was located on the site of the former Branford steamboat wharf, and featured a collection of vintage streetcars and trolleys.
