History of Brainerd

The city of Brainerd was first settled by the Ojibwe people. They established a village called Gull Lake in the 1800s. The first EuroAmerican settlers arrived in the 1860s and established a town called Brainerder. The city was named after the first settler, John C. Brainard. The city was incorporated in 1873.

The city grew rapidly due to the construction of the Northern Pacific Railway in the 1870s. The railway made Brainerd a major shipping center for timber and iron ore. The city also became a popular tourist destination due to its proximity to the lakes and forests of northern Minnesota.
