History of Bountiful

Bountiful, Utah is a city located in Davis County. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 42,552, making it the fifthlargest city in the county. The city is currently the secondlargest city in the county after Layton.

The city was originally settled in 1847 by Mormon pioneers under the leadership of Perrigrine Sessions. It was named Bountiful because of the many fish and game that were found in the area. The city was incorporated in 1850 and became a part of the newly created Utah Territory in 1851.

Bountiful quickly became an important stop on the Mormon trail as it was located on the route between Salt Lake City and Fort Bridger, Wyoming. It was also a popular resting place for westward bound travelers. The city became a division point for the Overland Stage in 1864.

The transcontinental railroad was completed through Bountiful in 1869 and the city soon became a shipping point for cattle, sheep, and agricultural products. The population of the city grew rapidly and by 1900 it had reached 1,697.
