The area was predominantly agricultural until the early 19th century, when the construction of the Delaware & Raritan Canal and the arrival of the Central Railroad of New Jersey spurred economic development.Bound Brook became a thriving manufacturing center, with factories producing items such as cigars, brass hardware, and cotton textiles.

The borough continued to grow in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the addition of several new factories and the opening of a trolley line to nearby Somerville in 1908.

Bound Brook was severely impacted by Hurricane Floyd in 1999, when floodwaters damaged or destroyed more than 1,000 homes and businesses. The community has since rebounded, and today Bound Brook is a vibrant, diverse borough with a rich history and a bright future.
