Sights in Boise
Since Boise is the capital of Idaho, it is rich in historical sites. The Idaho State Capitol is an interesting place to start. The capitol building is home to the Idaho Legislature and the Office of the Governor. Tours of the capitol are available MondayFriday. Another historical sight is the Old Idaho Penitentiary. The Old Idaho Penitentiary was in operation from 18721973 and is now a state historic site. The site offers tours, special events, and educational programs.
The City of Trees is also home to many parks and green spaces. Boise River Greenbelt is a 25mile long park that follows the Boise River through the city. History of Boise
The presentday city of Boise traces its roots to the Fort Boise trading post, which was established by the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1834. The post was first built on the north bank of the Boise River, but was soon relocated to the south bank, where it became the nucleus of a small settlement that grew up around it.
Boise officially became a city in 1863, when it was incorporated by the Idaho territorial legislature. At that time, it had a population of just over 700. The city continued to grow slowly but steadily throughout the rest of the 19th century, reaching a population of nearly 5,000 by 1900.
The 20th century brought significant changes to Boise. The city’s population exploded, reaching over 50,000 by 1950. This growth was largely due to the influx of people attracted by the new military installation, known as Mountain Home Air Force Base, which was established nearby during World War II.
Since the 1950s, Boise has continued to grow rapidly. It is now the largest city in Idaho, with a population of over 200,000. The city is home to a number of large businesses and institutions, including two major universities, and has a thriving arts and cultural scene.
