History of Boca Raton
The city of Boca Raton, Florida, was founded in 1925 by George Merrick, the son of apiarian developers. The name “Boca Raton” is derived from Spanish for “rats’ mouths”. The city was incorporated in 1927 with a population of 100 residents.
The city’s history is fairly recent, as compared to other parts of Florida. The area where the city now stands was originally inhabited by the Tequesta Indians. In 1513, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon arrived in the area, claiming it for Spain. The Spanish built a small fort here, but it was abandoned in the early 1600s.
In the early 1800s, the area was settled by a few families of pioneers. These settlers survived primarily on fishing and farming. In 1875, a devastating hurricane hit the area, destroying most of the crops and homes.
In 1893, Henry Flagler, a wealthy businessman, built a railroad through the area, connecting it to the rest of Florida. This spurred development in the area, and by the early 1900s, the population had grown to about 500.
In 1925, George Merrick began construction of a planned community which he named “Boca Raton”. The city was officially incorporated in 1927. During the Great Depression, many of the city’s residents lost their jobs and homes. However, the city’s economy bounced back quickly during World War II, due to the presence of a military base and several defense contractors in the area.
