History of Bluefield
Bluefield is a city in Mercer County, West Virginia, USA. The population was 10,478 at the 2010 census. Bluefield is the core city of the Bluefield WVVA micropolitan area, which has a population of 107,342. It is the fifth largest micropolitan area in the state of West Virginia. The city is also the seat of the Bluefield Sanitary Board, which governs sewerage and water district issues in Bluefield and nearby town of Bluefield, Virginia. The board has been operated since 1907.
The town was named for John Blue, who settled there in 1866. It was incorporated as a town in 1887 and as a city in 1900. The first post office opened in 1867.
The town was originally a coal mining town with many of its early settlers coming from England and Wales. The town’s population grew rapidly in the late 19th century and early 20th century as the coal mining industry boomed. By the mid20th century, the town’s economy began to decline as the coal industry went into decline. The town’s population also began to decline as residents left in search of jobs in other parts of the country.
