History of Bloomsburg
Bloomsburg is a town in Columbia County, Pennsylvania, United States, located 42 miles (68 km) southwest of WilkesBarre along the Susquehanna River. It is the county seat of Columbia County and the only incorporated town in Pennsylvania. The population was 14,445 at the 2010 census, and the estimated population in 2019 was 14,198.
Bloomsburg was established in 1772 by a charter granted to Judge Jacob Bloom by the court of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. It was named after Colonel Thomas Bloome, a commissioner on the Pennsylvanian Commission for Indian Affairs and one of the signatories of the Articles of Confederation.
Bloomsburg was originally part of Montour Township, and then became the county seat of Columbia County when it was formed in 1812. It was briefly the capital of Pennsylvania from 1820 to 1822, when the state legislature moved to Harrisburg.
The town’s early prosperity was based on iron production from local furnaces and the manufacture of glass and silk. These industries declined in the mid19th century, replaced by coal mining and the lumber industry.
