History of Bloomfield Hills

Bloomfield Hills is a small city located in Oakland County, Michigan. It is home to about 3,000 people and is one of the wealthiest communities in the state. The city was founded in 1821 by Hugh McGregor, who built a log cabin on what is now Long Lake Road. McGregor named the area “bloomfield” for the many wildflowers that grew in the area. The first permanent settlers were Elijah Wilkins and Timothy Burr, who arrived in 1822.

The city began to grow in the mid19th century when several wealthy Detroiters built summer homes in Bloomfield Hills. One of the most prominent was Hiram Walker, owner of the Walkerville distillery. Walker built a lavish estate called “Willowbrook” which included a greenhouse, servants’ quarters, and a large pack of foxhounds. Other wealthy Detroiters followed suit, and by the early 20th century Bloomfield Hills had become a popular destination for the city’s elite.

Today, Bloomfield Hills is still home to many wealthy residents, and its public schools are some of the best in the state. The city has a historic downtown area with several boutique shops and restaurants. It is also home to several country clubs and golf courses.
