History of Beverly
Beverly is a North Shore city in Essex County, Massachusetts, and a suburb of Boston. The population was 39,502 at the 2010 census. A resort, residential, and manufacturing community on the Massachusetts North Shore, Beverly includes Beverly Farms and Prides Crossing. Beverly is a rival of Marblehead for the title of being the birthplaces of the U.S. Navy.
The land that would become Beverly was first settled by Europeans in 1626 by Roger Conant from Gloucester, England. Conant “led a group of settlers who Nashaway lands from the Naumkeag (Indians) in 1626.” In 1635, he “was joined by John Balch, Francis West, and Edmund Ingalls, among others.” William Pynchon was another early Beverly settler. Beverly was part of Salem in 1668, and then was incorporated as a separate town on March 7, 1682. The name “Beverly” comes from an Old English term meaning “grassy clearing in a wooded area.”
Balch was one of the original signers of the Cambridge Agreement in 1629. He also served on the first jury and as selectman in 1633. Major Thomas Putnam also settled in Beverly in 1634. Balch’s son Benjamin eventually owned a large part of the West End. By 1665, there were 194 men able to serve in the militia. On January 24, 1676, the first ship “built on the North Shore” was launched from Beverly Harbor.
In 1667, Conant sold his interest in the area to Richard Crowninshield, and in 1670, Balch divided his land between his sons, giving 900 acres (3.6 km2) to George. On June 16, 1692, during the Salem witch trials, George was accused of witchcraft along with his wife Martha, and they were both hanged on Gallows Hill in Salem.
In 1705, large portions of Beverly were included in a new precinct called Norton, but this was absorbed into Salem in 1749. Parts of Beverly were annexed to Salem in 1752, 1765, and 1768. The town boundaries were set in 1814 when a new stone wall was built around much of presentday Beverly. The town was part of a wave of towns incorporated following the American Revolution.
In 1816, the manufacturer Peter Rider built the first shoe factory in Beverly on Cabot Street, which led to the development of the city’s shoe manufacturing industry. In 1866, Beverly became a summer resort for Bostonians after the construction of the Eastern Railroad.
Beverly is home to several historic sites. The Patton House, built in 1726, is the oldest surviving house in Beverly. The Beverly Heritage Center occupies the old city hall building, which was constructed in 1854. The Saltonstall Inn, also built in 1854, is a stilloperating hotel that was a popular summer resort in the late 19th century. The Beverly Farmer’s Market, held on Saturdays from midJune to midOctober, is the oldest continuously operating farmers market in Massachusetts.
