History of Bethlehem
Bethlehem is a town in Litchfield County, Connecticut, United States. The town is home to both the state’s oldest inn and its oldest continuously operated tavern. The town was named after the Biblical town of Bethlehem in Judea, which is now part of the state of Israel. The earliest known inhabitant of the Bethlehem area was Joshua Hoyt, who built a log cabin on what is now Main Street in 1759.
The land on which Hoyt built his cabin was part of a 500acre (2.0 km2) parcel of land that had been purchased by his father, Jonathan Hoyt, from the Mohican chief, Sachem Uncas, in 1684. The price was “thirty coats, ten bushels of corn, ten hogsheads of cider, and two horses.” This parcel of land was part of the reason that the town of Litchfield was established in may of 1720.
The town of Bethlehem was officially incorporated in 1787. The first church in town, the First Congregational Church of Christ in Bethlehem, was founded in 1769. The first doctor in town, Benjamin SPD Bibbins, began practicing medicine in 1775.
The town’s first tavern, the Blueallion Tavern, was established in 1779. The tavern is still in operation today, making it the oldest continuously operated tavern in the state of Connecticut.
The town’s first schoolhouse was built in 1783. The building is now home to the Litchfield Historical Society.
The Elijah Miller House, built in 1786, is the oldest house in town. It is now a museum.
The Topsmead State Forest, located in Bethlehem, was established in 1898.
