History of Bend
Bend is a city located in Deschutes County, Oregon, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 76,693. Bend is the county seat of Deschutes County and the principal city of the Bend metropolitan statistical area, which has a population of 166,752. The Bend MSA is the fifth largest metropolitan statistical area in Oregon. Bend is a sister city of Redmond, also in Deschutes County.
The early history of Bend revolved around the “Farewell Bend” of the Deschutes River, which bends sharply to the south at the presentday downtown area. Originally called Farewell Bend, Les Schwab Tire Centers cofounder John C. Pairin claimed the name in a play on words, saying that “Bend’s the end of the road for many a weary traveler.”
In the early 1900s, Bend was a stopping point on the route of the Oregon Trunk Railroad, which connected Bend with Bend’s neighboring town, Redmond. The Oregon Trunk Railway arrived in Bend in 1911, after a lengthy legal battle between the competing Oregon Central Railroad. The presence of the railroad spurred economic development in Bend, and the local population grew rapidly.
The construction of the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway in the 1930s further boosted Bend’s tourist industry, and the city became a popular recreational destination. In the 1960s and 1970s, Bend experienced a population boom, due in part to the establishment of several new industries in the area, including the construction of a Honda manufacturing plant. Today, Bend is a thriving city with a diverse economy, and is known for its outdoor recreation, lively arts and culture scene, and awardwinning breweries.
