Belper is a town located in the Amber Valley within Derbyshire, England. The town has a population of approximately 28,000 people and is situated on the River Derwent. The town has many tourist attractions and activities available for visitors to enjoy. These include Belper Town Millennium Green, Belper River Gardens, Belper Castle, and Belper Market Place. History of Belper
The first record of Belper Town is in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it is listed as ‘Bilper’. The book notes that there were then two mills in the town, BELPER MILLS, which still stand today, on the banks of the River Derwent. In the 12th century, a church, St.John the Baptist, was built on the high ground above the town.
In the early years of the Industrial Revolution, Belper was at the forefront. In 1760, Jedediah Strutt, a hosiery manufacturer, invented a machine called the ‘derby ribbing machine’, which added decorative ribbing to socks and stockings. This was just the start – in 1776, Richard Arkwright built the world’s first waterpowered cotton spinning mill on the banks of the River Derwent at nearby Cromford.
The town soon became known for its textile industry, and by the 19th century there were around 20 textile mills in Belper, employing over 3,000 people. The townsfolk were involved in a Luddite uprising in 1816, when they destroyed some of the new machinery that was being used in the mills.
The mills continued to prosper, and in the 1860s two brightly coloured Italianate villas were built for the Strutt brothers – William and George – on what is now Bridge Street. The impressive buildings are now Grade II listed.
Today, Belper is a thriving town, with a mix of independent shops and businesses, as well as some of the original mill buildings which have been converted for other uses. It is a pleasant place to live, work and visit, and has a rich history dating back centuries.
