History of Belmont (California)
Belmont, California is a city located in the western part of the San Francisco Bay Area in San Mateo County. The city has a population of about 26,000 people and is adjacent to San Carlos, San Mateo, andRedwood City. Belmont is situated on the San Francisco Peninsula, and its position near the ocean and bays make it a prime location for those who enjoy watersports. The city was incorporated in 1926 and is named after the Italian city of Belluno. The city’s motto is “A City of Volunteers”.
The first recorded history of the area now known as Belmont dates back to 1834 when Mexican settlers were given permission to grazing lands here by the Mexican government. In 1852, two Americans, Andrew S. Hallidie and Robert B. Woodward, became the first to attempt to mine coal in the hills north of Belmont. By the 1860s, what little coal was being mined had played out and the town was known as “Nortonville” after one of the largest landowners, Elias Norton.
In 1866, the Central Pacific Railroad laid tracks through the area on their way from San Francisco to San Jose. The townspeople were not happy about this and held up the train at gunpoint until they were given $500 in gold coin. The tracks were finally laid and the town became known as Belmont, after the Italian city of Belluno. The railroad brought increased development and growth to the area and by the 1880s Belmont was a thriving community with a school, businesses, and a post office.
In the early 1900s, Belmont became a summer retreat for wealthy San Franciscans who built large estates here. Many of these estates were later converted into housing developments. The 1920s saw a boom in construction with the building of new homes, businesses, and a new City Hall.
The 1930s brought the Great Depression and a decrease in construction. The 1940s were a time of recovery and growth as the United States entered World War II. The Belmont Shoreline Park was created in 1942 as a recreational area for the community.
Following the war, Belmont experienced a population boom as families moved to the suburbs in search of a better life. New homes and businesses were built and the community continued to grow.
