The Lewis and Clark Expedition passed through Bellevue on their journey westward in 1804. The Mormons established a settlement in Bellevue in 1846. Bellevue was incorporated as a city in 1855.

During the American Civil War, Bellevue was an important supply center for the Union Army. The city was also the site of a prisoner of war camp for confederate soldiers.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Bellevue became a bedroom community for Omaha. Many of the city’s large homes were built during this time.
