History of Belfast
Belfast, Maine is a city in Waldo County, Maine, United States. The population was 6,668 at the 2010 census. Belfast is the county seat of Waldo County. The city’s downtown is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Belfast Historic District.
The city of Belfast was incorporated in 1773. The name “Belfast” comes from the Irish city of the same name. Belfast was first settled in 1769 by Thomas Jayne and John Moore. In 1770, the first ship, the Unity, arrived from Boston, carrying Irish immigrants. The town was named after Belfast, Ireland. The community was incorporated as a city on February 18, 1853.
Belfast became the county seat of Waldo County in 1827. The county courthouse and jail were located on the corner of Court and High streets. A new county courthouse was built in 1858 on the corner of Spring and Main streets. In 1894, the county courthouse and jail were moved to the present location on Federal Street.
Belfast was a center of the shipbuilding industry in the 19th century. The Belfast shipyard was founded in 1848 by Alexander Haley. The city was also home to the engine works of the Union Iron Works.
In the early 20th century, Belfast was a popular summer resort for wealthy tourists from Boston and New York City. Large hotels, such as the Belfast House, were built to accommodate the tourists.
The city declined in the mid20th century as the shipbuilding industry declined and summer tourism dwindled. The city’s economy has diversified in recent years, with tourism now playing a significant role.
