History of Belen
Belen is a city located in Valencia County, New Mexico, United States. The city is the county seat of Valencia County. The city’s population was estimated to be 5,592 in 2019. Belen is located about 35 miles (56 km) south of Albuquerque.
The area around Belen was first settled in the 1740s by ranchers and farmers who came from Albuquerque. In 1752, a group of settlers from Belen, Spain, established a colony in the area. The town was named after the Spanish city of Belen. The colony was not successful and was abandoned a few years later.
In 1859, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway built a station in Belen. The town became a stop on the railway. The town grew slowly at first, but began to grow rapidly after the arrival of the railroad.
Belen was incorporated as a city in 1908. The city’s growth continued after the incorporation. The city had a population of 1,000 people in 1920.
