History of Bedford (Ohio)
Bedford, Ohio is a city located in Bedford Township in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. The city is part of the Greater Cleveland metropolitan area. The population was 13,074 at the 2010 census.
The first settlers in Bedford were Lorain County farmers who acquired land in the Virginia Military District around 1798. The area was survey in 1810 and Bedford Township was organized in 1814. The first school was built in 1815, followed by the first church in 1818. A gristmill was built in 1820 and a sawmill in 1823. The first post office opened in 1824.
The opening of the Erie Canal in 1827 brought an influx of new settlers and the town began to grow. By 1833 the population had reached 100. The first newspaper was established in 1834. A village charter was granted in 1837 and the village was incorporated in 1839. The first schoolhouse was built in 1840.
In 1846 the discontinuance of the Erie Canal caused Bedford’s growth to stop. However, the coming of the Ohio & Pennsylvania Railroad in 1852 brought new life to the village. The population grew to 1,000 by 1860.
During the Civil War, Bedford was a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1866, the village was renamed Bedford Heights. The village was reincorporated as a city in 1951.
Bedford is located in northeastern Ohio, southeast of Cleveland. The Cuyahoga River forms the southern boundary of the city.
According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 8.35 square miles (21.68 km2), of which 8.28 square miles (21.50 km2) is land and 0.07 square miles (0.18 km2) is water.
As of the census of 2010, there were 13,074 people, 5,741 households, and 3,377 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,579.0 inhabitants per square mile (610.7/km2). There were 6,405 housing units at an average density of 777.4 per square mile (300.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 62.4% White, 30.4% African American, 0.2% Native American, 2.8% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 3.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.1% of the population.
There were 5,741 households of which 31.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.0% were married couples living together, 17.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.5% had a male householder with no wife present, and 39.3% were nonfamilies. 33.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.92.
The median age in the city was 41.6 years. 24% of residents were under the age of 18; 8% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 25.3% were from 25 to 44; 29.4% were from 45 to 64; and 13% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 48.9% male and 51.1% female.
As of the census of 2000, there were 13,256 people, 5,864 households, and 3,608 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,711.7 people per square mile (659.7/km2). There were 6,280 housing units at an average density of 811.6 per square mile (313.8/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.57% White, 27.54% African American, 0.13% Native American, 1.68% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.31% from other races, and 1.54% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.21% of the population.
There were 5,864 households out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.4% were married couples living together, 15.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were nonfamilies. 30.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.84.
