History of Beckley
Beckley is a city in Raleigh County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 17,614 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Raleigh County and the principal city of the Beckley, WV Metro Statistical Area, which has a population of 98,872. Beckley was founded on April 4, 1838, as Beckleyville by John James and was named in honor of John James’ son, Alfred Beckley (1806–71). [1][2] Alfred Beckley was the first Clerk of Court for Raleigh County and also served as a United States Marshal. [3] The city was originally chartered by the Virginia General Assembly in 1858 as a town within Fayette County. The town was later annexed into the city limits by Raleigh County on January 1, 1878. [1][4] The city Report Card issued by the West Virginia Department of Education notes that “there have been no schools identified as failing” for the years 200708 through 201112. [5]
The first settlers to the area were American Indians from the Mound Builders culture, who settled in the region between 1,000 and 800 B.C. [6] Raleigh County was established in 1850, and Beckley was chartered as a town in 1858.
