History of Beaverton

Beaverton is a city in Washington County, Oregon, United States. The city center is seven miles (11 km) west of downtown Portland in the Tualatin River Valley. As of 2019, the population is 89,803. This makes it the sixthlargest city in Oregon and the secondlargest in the Portland metropolitan area. Beaverton is the home base of Nike, which is the city’s largest employer.

Early history

The area that would later become Beaverton was originally the home of the Atfalati band of the Kalapuya people. The Atfalati were subsistence hunters and gatherers. They were decimated by disease and warfare after contact with Europeans. The surviving members of the Atfalati band merged with the Tualatin band of the Yamhill people.

The city of Beaverton was founded in 1847 as a small farming community by law professor and judge John C. Aiken and his bride, Mary. In 1850, the U.S. government opened a post office in the community. Aiken remained the postmaster until his death in 1874. The town was platted in 1870 and incorporated as a city in 1893. The city’s early economy was based on agriculture, specifically berries and chicken egg production.

20th century

In the early 20th century, the city began to grow beyond its agricultural roots as the Portland metro area’s population increased. Between 1900 and 1930, the population of Beaverton grew ninefold. In 1909, the city’s first high school, Beaverton High School, opened. The school was expanded several times over the next few decades. In 1955, Nike cofounder Bill Bowerman began selling Japanese running shoes out of his car at local track meets. Nike has since become the city’s largest employer.

In 1962, Beaverton was selected as the site for the new Sunset Highway, now known as U.S. Route 26. The highway opened in 1968 and helped to spur Beaverton’s development. In the late 20th century and early 21st century, the city experienced Somewhat rapid growth, with several large developments such as the Cascade Station shopping center and the Round Square mixeduse development.

21st century

In the 2010 census, the city’s population was 87,489. For much of the early 21st century, the city’s population continued to grow rapidly, reaching a peak of 96,629 in 2017. However, the city’s growth has begun to slow in recent years, with a population of 89,803 in 2019.
