History of Beaufort (South Carolina)
Beaufort (/ˈboʊfərt/) is a city in and the county seat of Beaufort County, South Carolina, United States.[1] The city’s metropolitan area includes a substantial number of towns and villages within Beaufort County. The city is notable for its scenic location and for maintaining a historic character by preservation of its antebellum architecture in several downtown streetscapes.
The city is named for Henry Somerset, 2nd Duke of Beaufort, whose title came from the town of Beaufort in England. The original town, named after the duke, was founded in 1711. It underwent several name changes before being named Beaufort Town in 1712, inheriting its current name in 1804.
Beaufort is located at 32° 25′ N, 80° 40′ W (32.4167, 80.6667).[2] The lining of the Beaufort River was originally an important harbor, which became the site of Mitscher’s Fleet during the Civil War. The city’s downtown is on the Beaufort River, across from Forgottonia, prior to its estuary, Port Royal Sound. Port Royal Island was the site of the second French colony in North America, after Fort Caroline in Florida in 1564. The colony was established under the leadership of Jean Ribault, and served as an important base for the Huguenots, until it was overrun by Spain in 1565, as part of the ongoing conflict between France and Spain in Europe, known as the Wars of Religion.
The town was captured by Union troops in 1861 during the Civil War and occupied until the end of the war. The Union troops burnt many of the plantations, including the imposing mansions of many of the leading planters. After the war, the town was rebuilt.
Today, Beaufort is a charming Southern town, with a historic downtown district and scenic waterfront. It is a popular retirement destination and secondhome market. New construction in the historic district is currently constrained by Beaufort’s status as a National Historic Landmark District. However, much of the surrounding unincorporated area of northern Beaufort County has seen significant suburban growth in recent years as part of the Greater Hilton Head Island area.
