The Baytown area was originally inhabited by Atakapa and Karankawa Indians. It was later settled by AngloAmericans in the 1830s who came to the area to farm and ranch. The town was initially called “Baytown” because of its location on Galveston Bay. It was later incorporated as a city in 1948.
The city is home to several industries, including oil refining, petrochemical manufacturing, steel production, and shipping. History of Baytown
Baytown is a city in Harris County, Texas, United States, within the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. Founded in 1948, it is the thirdlargest city within this metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the city’s population was 74,732.
The area now known as Baytown was originally settled by the Karankawa and Atakapa Native American tribes. Spanish explorers arrived in the area in the 1500s, and the first known permanent European settlement was established in 1781 by French settlers. The town was subsequently captured by the Spanish, then the Mexicans, before becoming part of the Republic of Texas in 1836.
After Texas was admitted to the United States in 1845, the town was renamed “Baytown” and incorporated in 1948. The city’s growth began in the 1930s with the development of the Goose Creek oilfield. During World War II, the city’s economy shifted to support the war effort, and Baytown became a major petrochemical center.
Today, Baytown is a thriving city with a diversified economy. The city is home to a number of major industries, including oil refining, chemical manufacturing, and steel production.
