Bayonne is a city Located in Hudson County, New Jersey. As of the 2010 United States Census, Bayonne had a total population of 63,024, reflecting an increase of 1,880 from the 61,144 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 5,627 from the 55,517 counted in the 1990 Census.
Formerly an industrial town with a strong IrishAmerican population and several shipyards, Bayonne has undergone redevelopment in recent decades, with new housing, office towers, and aulton the water.
The Military Ocean Terminal Bayonne, which occupied 22% of Bayonne’s land area when it was active, was a major point of embarkation for troops during World War II and the Korean War. Bayonne is also home to the Bayonne Bridge, a steel cantilever bridge connecting Staten Island to New Jersey and one of the longest bridges in the world when it opened in 1931.
According to the 2010 Census, Bayonne is split into eight wards, each of which elects two council members to the Bayonne Municipal Council. The mayor is elected atlarge to a fouryear term. The 2010 Census showed that Bayonne is predominantly Caucasian (54.3%), with sizable Hispanic (26.8%), African American (9.5%), and Asian (8.1%) populations.

History of Bayonne
The first Europeans to settle the area of presentday Bayonne were the French in 1663, who named it after Bayonne, France. The French had established several settlements in the area, including one known as Pavonia that was along the Hackensack River. In 1664, the English took over the Dutch colony of New Netherland, which included the area that would become Bayonne. In June 1674, the settlement of Bergen (which is now Jersey City) and other areas in New Netherland were transferred to the English. Pavonia became part of Bergen Township at that time. Though the English name for the town was Berkeley Heights, the name Bayonne began to be used by the end of 1674 and was officially adopted in 1784.
It was during the American Revolutionary War that Bayonne and the rest of Bergen County saw an influx of Loyalist refugees from New York City and Staten Island, as well as other areas in New Jersey. Many of these refugees were granted land in Bayonne and other parts of the county by the state of New Jersey.
After the war, Bayonne grew steadily as a quiet farming community. This all changed in 1869 when the construction of the Newark Bay Extension of the Central Railroad of New Jersey (CNJ) was completed. This made Bayonne a convenient commuting hub for those working in Newark or New York City. The population of the town exploded, increasing from just over 1,000 in 1870 to over 22,000 by 1900.
The CNJ Railroad not only brought commuters to Bayonne, but also industries and jobs. One of the largest employers in the early 20th century was the Hackensack Improvement Company, which operated a large shipyard in Bayonne. This shipyard was responsible for building many of the Liberty Ships used during World War II.
Today, Bayonne is a diverse city of over 63,000 people. Though the shipyard is long gone, the city still has a strong industrial presence. It is also home to a number of parks, museums, and other cultural attractions.
