History of Bay Saint Louis
In the early 17th century, French explorers made their way to the Mississippi River Delta region. They were searching for a site to build a port city that would allow them to ship goods back to France. However, the French settlers persevered and eventually cleared the sandbar, creating a deepwater channel. They then founded the city of “Bay Saint Louis” in 1699.
The city quickly became a thriving center of trade and commerce. Ships from all over the world stopped at the port to pick up and drop off goods. The city also became known for its sugar plantations and for producing some of the finest textiles in the country.
During the American Revolution, Bay Saint Louis was a hotbed of activity. The city was home to a large number of privateers (pirate ships that attacked British ships) and was a frequent target of British attacks.
