History of Bay City
Bay City, Michigan is located at the Saginaw River on Lake Huron. The city was established in 1837 and was first incorporated as a village in 1865. Bay City was a major lumbering town in the 19th century and was also an important shipbuilding center.
The city was hit by a massive fire in 1873 which destroyed a large portion of the downtown area. The city was rebuilt and continued to grow. By the early 1900s, Bay City was a major manufacturing center for the Midwest with several large factories located in the city.
The Great Depression hit Bay City hard, but the city recovered and continued to grow. During World War II, the city’s factories produced armor plating for ships and tanks.
