History of Battle Creek
The city of Battle Creek, Michigan is located on the Kalamazoo river about 30 miles south of Kalamazoo. It is the county seat of Calhoun County. The city has a population of about 52,347 people. The site was originally inhabited by the Potawatomi Native Americans who used the area as a crossroads for trading routes. The first permanent white settler in the area was Elijah Harrison who arrived in 1831.
In 1832, a post office was established and the community was named Battle Creek after a nearby stream where a Native American battle had occurred. The village was incorporated in 1859. The city grew rapidly during the Civil War era as it was a center for the manufacture of military supplies. Several large factories were built in the city, including the Gunpowder mills and the Refugee Clothing Company.
After the war, the city’s economy shifted to a focus on cereal production. The first readytoeat breakfast cereal, called Granula, was invented inBattle Creek by Dr. James C. Jackson in 1863. Other companies soon followed, such as the Kellogg Company and the Postum Cereal Company. Battle Creek became known as the “Cereal Capital of the World.”
The city continued to grow in the early 20th century. Several large hotels were built, including the W.K. Kellogg Manor House and the HartDoleInouye Federal Center.
