Barre is a city in Washington County, Vermont, United States. The population was 9,052 at the 2010 census. It is the shire town (county seat) of Washington County. Barre is the principal city of the Barre, Vermont Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Washington County (2010 population: 31,164).
Barre itself is located approximately 60 miles southeast of Burlington, the state’s largest city, and 20 miles west of Montpelier, the state capital. Built on the granite that gives the town its name, Barre is known as the “Granite Capital of the World.”
The granite quarries, of which there were once more than 2,000 operational, supported the town’s growth into one of the largest manufacturing centers for granite in the world during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, Barre is home to six granite companies, three of which are the largest in the United States. The city is also home to the Rock of Ages quarry, which is the largest deephole dimension granite quarry in the world.
In addition to its abundant granite quarries and factories, Barre is home to several important Vermont historical sites. These include the Old Labor Hall, the Vermont Granite Museum, and the Everett Quarry. The Old Labor Hall is the oldest working labor hall in the United States and is on the National Register of Historic Places. History of Barre
Barre is a city located in Washington County, Vermont, USA. The city is the shire town (county seat) of Washington County. Barre City is an urban town located in central Vermont. It is the county seat for Washington County and the principal city of the Barre, VT Micropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). Barre was first settled in 1788 by Alexander Elliott, a Revolutionary War veteran and land speculator from Middlesex County, Connecticut. He laid out the town, then known as Elliott’s Addition, and built the first house. In 1791, government commissioner Jacob Davis laid out the town common, which remains Main Street to this day. Barre was chartered as a city in 1895.
Barre is known as “The Granite City” because of the large number of granite quarries and processors in the area. The granite industry was the main economic activity in Barre for much of the 19th and 20th centuries. The city is home to the Rock of Ages quarry, the largest deephole granite quarry in the world. The “Barringer Crater” in Cossadystate park is named after Daniel Barringer, a mining engineer who was the first to suggest that it was created by a meteor.
Barre is also home to the Vermont History Museum, the Vermont Maple Sugar Makers’ Association, the Vermont Granite Museum, and the E.L. Smith Quarrymen’s Museum. The city is the site of the annual Vermont Festival of the Arts, and the Barre Players Community Theater group performs regularly at the Barre Opera House.
