History of Bardstown
Bardstown, Kentucky is located in Nelson County in the central Bluegrass Region of the state. Founded in 1780, it is one of the oldest cities in Kentucky. Bardstown is the county seat and has a population of about 13,000 people. The city is best known for its bourbon industry and as the host of the Kentucky Bourbon Festival, which attracts over 50,000 visitors each year.
Bardstown was established by EuropeanAmerican settlers in 1780 on the banks of the Salt River. The town was named for James Garrard, the Governor of Kentucky from 1796 to 1804. Bardstown was chartered as a city in 1838.
The early history of Bardstown is closely intertwined with the history of bourbon whiskey. The first commercial distillery in Kentucky was built in Bardstown in 1783, and the city soon became a center of the bourbon industry. Bardstown is home to the Heaven Hill Distillery, the Jim Beam American Stillhouse, and the Bardstown Bourbon Company, among others.
