Baraboo is a city in Sauk County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 12,048 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sauk County. Baraboo is home to the Circus World Museum, the former headquarters and winter quarters of the Ringling Brothers circus and itsWinter Circus.
The Al. Ringling Theatre is an ornate theater built in 1915 in Baraboo. The theater is on the National Register of Historic Places. The theater presents musicals, comedy and drama throughout the year.
The City of Baraboo operates two municipal golf courses; Sand Valley, which was ranked in 2017 as the 8th best new golf course in the world by Golf Digest, and The Meadows at Crawford Oaks. The courses are operated by Ridges Resort and Golf Club.
The Baraboo Riverwalk is a pedestrian pathway along the Baraboo River. It runs from the East side of Baraboo, under the Wisconsin State Highway 33 bridge, to the Baraboo roundhouse. Along the way, it passes outdoor sculptures, the historic Al. Ringling Mansion, and the Circus World Museum. The Baraboo Riverwalk is part of the greater Sauk County Riverwalk system.

The International Crane Foundation is located just outside of Baraboo, in the town of Baraboo. The foundation is dedicated to the conservation of cranes and the ecosystems upon which they depend. History of Baraboo
Baraboo is a city in and the county seat of Sauk County, Wisconsin, United States. The largest city in the Baraboo micropolitan area, Baraboo is the principal city of the Baraboo Micropolitan Statistical Area. Its 2010 population was 12,048. It is situated on the Baraboo River.
Baraboo was first established as a logging community in 1838, when Keener De Voe set up his sawmill near what is now Devil’s Lake State Park. The city was named after FrenchCanadian trapper Joseph Baraboo, who settled in the area in the 1820s. By 1846, the village had grown to include a gristmill, a store, and about 30 families.
In 1852, the Wisconsin Territorial Legislature created Sauk County from portions of neighboring counties, and Baraboo was designated as its county seat. The city continued to grow throughout the second half of the 19th century, reaching a peak population of nearly 5,000 in 1900. The circus industry became established in Baraboo in the late 19th century, with the Ringling Brothers and Walter L. Main both setting up operations in the city.
The early 20th century was a period of economic decline for Baraboo, as the circus industry went into decline and the city’s sawmills and paper mills began to close. The city’s economy began to rebound in the 1920s, however, as manufacturing and tourism became increasingly important. The city’s population also began to grow again at this time, reaching a peak of nearly 10,000 in 1970.
Today, Baraboo is a tourist destination due to its proximity to Wisconsin Dells and Devil’s Lake State Park. The city is also home to the Circus World Museum, which chronicles the city’s history as a center of the circus industry.
