History of Bar Harbor
Bar Harbor is a town on Mount Desert Island in Hancock County, Maine, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 5,235. Bar Harbor is a popular tourist destination in the DownEast area of Maine and home to the College of the Atlantic, Jackson Laboratory, and MDI Biological Laboratory (among other notable organizations). Prior to a devastating fire in 1947, the town was a famous summer colony for the wealthy elite, and as such, many grand mansions and hotels were built there.
The town’s name changed several times before settling on “Bar Harbor” in 1918. It was first incorporated as Eden in 1796, then Belleemploye in 1798, and finally Bar Harbor in 1918. The town’s land was first settled by French Acadians in the 17th century. They were driven out of their settlements by British forces in 1759 during the French and Indian War. The land was then controlled by the British until the American Revolution.
After the war, the town reverted to its former name of Eden. The first permanent settler in Eden was Joshua Rhoades, who arrived in 1783. By 1789, there were twelve families living in the town. In 1791, the town was divided into two parts: the upper part was named Mount Desert and the lower part Eden.
The first recorded tourist to come to Eden was George Pigot, 2nd Baron ARCADE, who visited in 1792. Pigot was so impressed with the scenery that he wrote a book about his visit entitled A Tour in America. This book helped to increase interest in the area, and by 1825, there were over 100 guests staying in Eden.
The first inn in Eden was built in 1793 by John Quincy Adams, and was called the Mount Desert Hotel. In 1802, Josiah and Nancy Carter built the first brick house in Eden. The first church was built in 1803. Eden soon became a popular summer tourist destination for the wealthy elite from Boston, New York, and Philadelphia.
Many grand mansions and hotels were built in Eden during the 19th century, including the Newport House, the Mt. Desert House, the Cedar Hill House, and the Ocean House. These hotels catered to the wealthy guests who came to Eden to enjoy the cool summer climate and the beautiful scenery.
The village of Eden was destroyed by a fire on October 8, 1947. The fire started in a garage and quickly spread throughout the village, burning over 1,000 buildings. Only a few buildings were left standing, including the Mt. Desert Hotel and the Ocean House.
After the fire, the town was rebuilt and many of the grand mansions and hotels were replaced with more modest summer cottages. The town’s name was changed to Bar Harbor in 1947, in honor of the fact that it is located on the shore of Frenchman Bay.
Today, Bar Harbor is a popular tourist destination, with many shops, restaurants, and hotels. The town is also home to the College of the Atlantic, Jackson Laboratory, and MDI Biological Laboratory.
