History of Baltimore
In 1729, the Town of Baltimore was founded by the Maryland Assembly. The town was named after Lord Baltimore, the first proprietor and Governor of the Province of Maryland. Lord Baltimore had been granted a charter for the land that would become Maryland in 1632. The charter gave Lord Baltimore complete control over the land, which he then granted to Pennsylvania Dutch settlers.
The Town of Baltimore quickly became a prosperous trading center. The location of the town, at the confluence of the Chesapeake Bay and the Patapsco River, made it an ideal place for ships to stop and trade. The town soon became a leading port for the export of tobacco and wheat.
In 1776, the residents of Baltimore were some of the first to sign the Declaration of Independence. The city then served as a major military base during the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.
During the Industrial Revolution, Baltimore’s port became one of the busiest in the country. The city’s location, near coal mines and iron foundries, made it a perfect place for factories.
