History of Austin (Minnesota)
Founded in 1856 on the south bank of the Minnesota River in presentday Rice County, the town of Austin was named in honor of Henry Austin, a land agent for the then newly formed Saint Paul and Pacific Railroad. As the legend goes, Austin was thrown off course while surveying the land for the railroad and mistakenly laid out the town on the wrong side of the river. At the time, this was considered to be an act of poor judgement and negligence on Austin’s part. The error cost the railroad company a significant amount of money, which they attempted to recoup by sueing Austin. The case eventually went to the Minnesota Supreme Court, who sided with Austin and found that the railroad company was not entitled to any damages.
While the town of Austin was technically founded in 1856, it wasn’t until 1869 that it was officially recognized by the state of Minnesota. This was due to the fact that the town was initially located within the boundaries of the Dakota Territory and was not annexed by the state of Minnesota until after the DakotaMinnesota border dispute was settled.
Today, Austin is the county seat of Mower County and is home to a population of just over 24,000 people. The city is perhaps best known as the home of Hormel Foods, the producer of SPAM canned meat.
