History of Aurora (Illinois)
Aurora, Illinois is a city located in DuPage, Kane, Kendall, and Will counties in the U.S. state of Illinois. It is located in the metropolitan area of Chicago. The city had a population of 197,899 at the 2010 census, and was the second most populous city in the state, and the 115th most populous city in the country. Aurora’s History In 1834, Joseph McCarty, an Englishman, and his family became the first settlers in what would eventually become the city of Aurora. McCarty built a log cabin on the east bank of the Fox River. The following year, John Kinzie, an Indian trader, established a trading post on the west bank of the river, just north of McCarty’s cabin.
In 1837, the two men, along with McCarty’s brother David and under the direction of Colonel Benjamin Taylor, laid out the streets of what would become the town of Aurora. That same year, the three men opened a ferry service to transport people and goods across the river. In 1838, the legislative body of Illinois officially recognized Aurora as a town. In 1857, Aurora became the first town in Illinois to be incorporated as a city.
The city of Aurora began to grow rapidly in the late 19th century. In 1881, the west side of the city was annexed, and in 1883, the north side was annexed. In 1900, the west side of Aurora was once again annexed, this time by the city of Chicago. Aurora then became landlocked, and as a result, much of the growth of the city occurred on the east side of the Fox River.
The 1920s was a period of great prosperity for Aurora, and the city saw a boom in population, industry, and new construction. Unfortunately, the Great Depression hit the city hard, and Aurora’s economy did not begin to recover until the beginning of World War II.
