Attleboro is a city in Bristol County, Massachusetts, United States, about 23 miles south of Boston and 18 miles north of Providence in the state of Rhode Island. The population was 43,593 in 2016. Attleboro is located on the Ten Mile River which flows into Narragansett Bay.
The city was originally incorporated in 1694 as the town of Attleborough. It included the towns of Cumberland, Rhode Island and Attleborough Falls, Massachusetts. The town was reincorporated in 1787 as the city of Attleboro, after the town of Cumberland, Rhode Island split off and incorporated as a separate city. The city was named for William Pynchon, an early settler of the adjacent town of Salem, and was incorporated as “William Pynchon’s city.”
The earliest known inhabitants of the Attleboro area were the Nipmuc Indians. The Nipmuc occupied the lands along the Ten Mile River from Mount Hope in Rhode Island to Pawtucket, Massachusetts. Their capital village, Pascommuck, was located approximately where downtown Attleboro is today. The Nipmuc were conquered by the Wampanoags in the 1620s and their surviving members were dispersed.
The first European settlers in the Attleboro area were a group of Puritans from Salem led by Roger Conant in 1636. They settled on the west side of the Ten Mile River, upstream from Rober Conant’s farm. There they founded the first permanent European settlement in the Attleboro area.
In 1660, Attleborough was incorporated as a town. It included the presentday towns of North Attleborough, Cumberland, and Attleborough Falls, as well as parts of Mansfield, Norton, and Sharon. The town was named for William Pynchon, an early settler of the adjacent town of Salem, and was incorporated as “William Pynchon’s city.”
Pynchon’s successor, John Woodbridge, was one of the leaders of King Philip’s War. He was arrested in 1676 for his role in the conflict, and subsequently tried and executed. His imprisonment resulted in his family’s loss of their farm, and the town of Attleborough was divided into north and south parts.
The northern half, which included the land of the Woodbridge family farm, was incorporated as the town of North Attleborough in 1913.

History of Attleboro
In 1634, a group of Puritans from Plymouth Colony settled in the area now known as Attleboro. They purchased the land from the Wampanoag Chief Catapenum for three pounds worth of wampum and ten Eliot eelskins. The settlers named their new community Attleborough in honor of Mr. Thomas Attleborough, an official of Plymouth Colony.
In 1776, during the American Revolutionary War, Attleborough was a center for the manufacture of woolen goods, leather, shoes and other war supplies. The town’s population increased rapidly, and by 1790 it had reached 1,615. In 1809, the town was incorporated as a city.
The Massachusetts (provincial) legislature created Bristol County on June 2, 1685, splitting off what is now Norfolk County.
