Sights in Athol
Athol is the county seat of Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 11,584 at the 2010 census. Athol is home to the AtholRoyalston Regional School District, including Athol High School, as well as North Quabbin Community Pool and Park. Located in northcentral Massachusetts, Athol borders the town of Orange to the north, Phillipston to the northwest, Royalston to the southwest, Petersham to the southeast, and Erving to the northeast. parts of Athol lie within the town of Warwick to the west, and the town of Orange to the east. The town includes the villages of Athol Center, East Athol, South Athol, and North Athol. Athol is 33mi northwest of Worcester, 47mi northeast of Springfield, and 20mi due west of Keene, New Hampshire, the nearest city.
The first settlers in Athol arrived in 1735. John Leland, considered the father of Athol, arrived in 1740 with Athol’s first settlers. Leland had been a miller in Concord and had learned of the much better land quality in central Massachusetts when he met Johnathan Baldwin while working on a mill in Lunenburg. Baldwin told Leland of the meadows, hills, and brooks in central Massachusetts and sold Leland his Lunenburg farm for £70. Leland took Baldwin’s advice and settled in Central Massachusetts.
Athol would be set off from the town of Templeton and incorporated in 1762. The first town meeting was held in May 1762 in the home of Colonel Timoty Bigelow. Athol would remain a small rural farming town with lumbering and shoe making as supplemental industries until the arrival of the Athol and North Quabbin Railroad in Athol Center in 1873. The railroad brought industry and jobs to Athol and Athol Center and played a large role in the development of Athol as it is known today.

Clapp, the Athol Machine Company built machines that automated the manufacture of shoes. Athol soon became known as the “Shoe Town of the World” with over twenty shoe factories operating in the town at the peak of the industry. The Athol Machine Company would merge with the Banner Shoe Machine Company in 1896 to form the United Shoe Machinery Corporation, which would go on to become the largest shoe machinery manufacturer in the world.
