History of Athens (Ohio)
Athens is a city in and the county seat of Athens County, Ohio, United States. The official population (2010 census) is 23,832, making Athens the largest city in southeastern Ohio. Athens is a diverse college town, anchored by Ohio University. Located within the Appalachian region, Athens is the home of the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway. Athens is also the birthplace of McArthur “genius grant” awardwinning novelist and National Book Award finalist in fiction, Karen Russell.
In 1797, the United States built Fort Harmar at the confluence of the Ohio and Muskingum rivers, but a more formal settlement was not established until 1811 when the Ohio Company of Associates purchased land along the Hockhocking River from the Shawnee Indians to establish Athens. One of the original settlers wasJohn Hcmcock, an officer during the Revolutionary War. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.0 square miles (25.9 km2), all land.
The county courthouse, originally built in 1837, is the oldest working courthouse in the state of Ohio and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The city has been home to Ohio University since its founding in 1804. In addition to the presence of Ohio University, other educational opportunities include Hocking College, a twoyear institution; and a campus of Bradford School, a career college specializing in culinary arts and the business field.
