History of Astoria
The city of Astoria, Oregon is located in the northwest corner of the state on the Columbia River. The site was first explored by the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1805. In 1811, John Jacob Astor established a fur trading post on the river, which became the first permanent American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains. The Astoria column, built in 1926, commemorates this event.
In 1813, the British established a rival fur trading post at Fort Vancouver, just upriver from Astoria. This led to the socalled Pig War in 1859, when a dispute over the ownership of some pigs led to a standoff between British and American troops. The incident was resolved peacefully, but it did serve to underscore the volatile nature of relations between the two countries in the early years of settlement.
In the 1850s, Astoria became an important port for gold miners traveling to and from the California Gold Rush. Steamboats brought goods and passengers up and down the river, and the town grew rapidly.
Today, Astoria is a small city of about 10,000 people, but it still retains its historic character. The downtown area is filled with Victorianera buildings, and the Astoria Riverwalk offers beautiful views of the river and the nearby mountains.
