History of Ashtabula
The city of Ashtabula is located in the Northeastern region of Ohio on the southern shore of Lake Erie. The name “Ashtabula” is derived from the Native American MiamiIllinois language and it translates to “river of many fish”. The history of the city can be traced back to the early 19th century when the first settlers arrived in the area.
The city was officially founded in 1803 and it quickly became a thriving hub for trade and commerce. The construction of the Ashtabula Harbor in 1834 made the city an important port for Great Lakes shipping. Ashtabula also became known for its iron and steel industry which began in the 1850s.
The city continued to grow and prosper throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. However, the city was dealt a major blow in 1929 when the Ashtabula River Bridge collapsed, killing over 80 people. The city bounced back from this tragedy and today it is a thriving community with a rich history and bright future.
