History of Ashland (Wisconsin)
Ashland, Wisconsin is a city located in the northwest corner of the state near Lake Superior. The city has a long and interesting history dating back to the early 1800s when it was first settled by European Americans.
The first recorded permanent settlement in the area that would become Ashland was made in 1816 when fur trader Michael Cadotte built a trading post near the Kakagon Sloughs. This slough is a wetland area which was and is important for the movement of waterfowl. In the Ojibwe language, the word for this slough is “gichibiitoobiig,” which means “big sea water.”
In 1854, the City of Ashland was officially established and named after Henry Clay’s estate in Kentucky. Just one year later, in 1855, the city became the county seat of Ashland County.
The period from the late 1800s through the early 1900s was a time of great growth for Ashland. The city’s population nearly tripled during this time, going from 3,000 in 1890 to 8,500 in 1910.
