History of Arthur
In 1857, a small group of German immigrants seeking religious freedom settled in what is now Arthur, Illinois. They were the first permanent residents of the city, which was then known as Dieterich’s Station. The settlers named their new community after Arthur Dieterich, one of the founders.
The Germans were soon joined by other immigrants, including Irish, Czech, and Dutch. The city rapidly grew in size and by 1867, it had a population of nearly 600. The first school was built that same year, and the city was officially incorporated in 1869.
The early years of Arthur were shaped by the arrival of the railroad. The Belleville and Southern Illinois Railroad reached the city in 1871, making it an important stop on the line. This spurred economic growth and attracted new businesses and industries to the city.
In the early 20th century, Arthur was a thriving farming community. The city’s population peaked at around 1,500 in the 1920s. However, the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl disaster of the 1930s hit the community hard. Many residents left Arthur in search of better economic opportunities elsewhere.
