History of Arlington (Texas)
Founded in 1876, Arlington is one of the oldest cities in Texas. Located in the heart of the DallasFort Worth Metroplex, Arlington is home to more than 400,000 residents. The city is known for its worldclass entertainment venues, including the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium, the Texas Rangers’ Globe Life Park, and Six Flags Over Texas. Arlington is also home to the University of Texas at Arlington and a variety of other colleges and universities.
The city of Arlington was founded in 1876 by General Robert E. Lee and Colonel socta White as a city on the Trinity River. The name “Arlington” comes from the Arlington plantation that belonged to Lee’s family. The plantation was named after the Arlington House in Washington D.C., which was built by George Washington Parke Custis, Lee’s adoptive father. Arlington was originally part of Johnson County, but became its own city in 1884.
In 1895, Arlington was selected as the site of the new $3 million dollar Arlington State Normal School (now the University of Texas at Arlington). The school’s opening in September 1895 attracted so many students from around the state that the city’s population nearly tripled in size.
During World War II, Arlington was an important training center for the U.S. Army Air Forces.
