Arlington Heights, Illinois, is a village in Cook County in the U.S. state of Illinois. A northwest suburban village of Chicago, Arlington Heights is located about 25 miles from the city’s Loop. The village is also home to Arlington Park Race Track and the Arlington Heights Memorial Library. The Metra Northwest Line has a stop in Arlington Heights.
The first settlers in Arlington Heights were primarily German immigrants who arrived in the 1840s. In 1853, William Dunton, considered the father of Arlington Heights, platted 160 acres of improved farmland that he had bought from Potawatomi Indians. The first school was built in 1862. Arlington Heights was originally part of Palatine Township, but in 1869, it broke away to form its own township. In 1897, the village formally incorporated and two years later, electric service and waterlines were installed.
In the early 20th century, Arlington Heights became known as “The Town of Churches” because of the large number of religious institutions located there. Arlington Heights was also home to many grand estates, such as the L. Thomas Roberts house on Highland Avenue, which was built in 1912 and cost $85,000 to construct.
