History of Arkansas City

Arkansas City is a historic city located in the southwestern corner of the U.S. state of Arkansas. The city is situated on the Arkansas River, near the confluence of the Verdigris and Walnut rivers, in the county of Desha. It is the county seat of Desha County and the principal city of the Arkansas City–Van Buren metropolitan statistical area, which includes all of Crawford and Sebastian counties in Arkansas. The fourthlargest city in the state, Arkansas City had a population of 26,448 at the 2010 census.

The city of Arkansas City was first incorporated as a town on February 13, 1859, less than one year before Arkansas became a state. The city was reincorporated as a city on November 3, 1866, following the American Civil War. The name “Arkansas City” was derived from the nearby Arkansas River; “Arkansa” is a French spelling of the Quapaw Indians’ name for the river.

Arkansas City was home to a large number of Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War, and it was from Arkansas City that a number of expeditions were sent out to raid Union Army posts in Indian Territory (presentday Oklahoma). The city was also an important stop on the California Trail and the Santa Fe Trail.

After the war, Arkansas City became an important trading center for cattle and cowboys driving herds north to Abilene, Kansas. The city was also a major stop on the Arkansas and Choctaw Railway, which operated from 1873 to 1893.

In the early 1880s, Arkansas City was embroiled in the Wichita Massacre, in which a posse of Wichita vigilantes raided Arkansas City in search of fugitive slaves. The raiders killed four men, wounded several others, and terrorized the city’s AfricanAmerican community.

The city continued to grow in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and by the mid20th century, it was one of the largest cities in the state, with a population of over 20,000. Arkansas City’s economy declined in the second half of the 20th century, however, and the city’s population began to decline in the 1970s.

Arkansas City is still a thriving city, however, and its historic downtown has been revitalized in recent years. The city is home to several museums and historical sites, and its proximity to the Arkansas River makes it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
