History of Appleton
Appleton, Wisconsin, was named for Samuel Appleton, an early settler who built the first permanent residence in the area in 1847. A sawmill followed in 1849, and Appleton was officially incorporated as a village in 1853. The following year, it was designated the county seat of Outagamie County. The city gradually grew in the years that followed, fueled in part by the arrival of several railroads.
One of the most significant events in Appleton’s early history occurred in 1857, when city leaders persuaded grocer John C. Ryan to locate his business in the city. Ryan’s store became the first link in a chain that would eventually become known as Shopko.
