History of Ansonia
The city of Ansonia is located in southwestern Connecticut, in the Naugatuck River Valley. It is approximately 60 miles from Hartford, the state capital, and 20 miles from New York City. Founded in 1724, it is one of the oldest cities in the state. Originally part of the town of Derby,Ansonia was incorporated as a separate borough in 1864 and as a city in 1889.
The area now known as Ansonia was settled in 1652 as part of the town of Farmington by English Puritans from Hartford. In 1687, the town of Derby was established, which included what is now Ansonia. The first European settlers in the area were Dutch, who founded a settlement called Swaanendael on the banks of the Delaware River in presentday Delaware. However, this settlement was destroyed by the English in 1632.
The English settlers who arrived in the Naugatuck River Valley in the 1640s were mostly farmers from Farmington and Waterbury. The area was initially part of the town of Derby, which was established in 1675. In 1724, the area that is now Ansonia was established as the Parish of Ansonia within the town of Derby. The name “Ansonia” is derived from Elizabeth Annhurst, the wife of one of the original settlers, Colonel Benjamin Foote.
The parish grew slowly at first, but began to experience more rapid growth after the opening of the New Haven and Northampton Turnpike in 1798, which ran through the center of Ansonia. The turnpike brought increased trade and business to the area, and by 1850, the parish had a population of over 1,000.
In 1864, the parish of Ansonia was incorporated as a borough. At this time, the borough included what is now the city of Ansonia, as well as the nearby towns of Derby and Seymour. In 1889, the borough of Ansonia was chartered as a city.
