History of Ann Arbor
Ann Arbor is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Washtenaw County. The 2010 census recorded its population to be 113,934, making it the sixth largest city in Michigan. The Ann Arbor Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) includes all of Washtenaw County, which had a population of 344,791 at the 2010 census. Ann Arbor is also part of the larger Detroit–Ann Arbor–Flint, MI Combined Statistical Area (CSA), with a population of 5,318,744.
The area was first inhabited by the Ojibwe and Potawatomi Indian tribes. The French established a trading post in the area in the early 18th century, but the British took over the territory after the French and Indian War in 1763. The city was named after wives of the settlers. The University of Michigan moved from Detroit to Ann Arbor in 1837, and the city grew at a rapid pace thereafter. During the American Civil War, Ann Arbor was strongly abolitionist. In 1861, the Legislature of Victories declared Ann Arbor a station on the Underground Railroad.
During the mid20th century, Ann Arbor was the home of the Ann Arbor Civic Theatre, the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, and the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance. Ann Arbor is also the birthplace of the punk rock band, the Stooges.
